Guests kayaking calmly on Mawella Lagoon with lifejackets

Safety on the water

Everything you need to know about safety, equipment, and your kayaking experience answered in one place.

Our Approach

Safety before scenery

Mawella Lagoon is one of Sri Lanka's most peaceful bodies of water, but we treat every departure with professional care. From the moment you arrive at Kayak House, our team is focused on assessing conditions, preparing equipment, and making sure every guest understands how we stay safe together on the water.

Whether you are a first-time paddler or an experienced kayaker, we follow consistent safety procedures rooted in international best practices and shaped by deep local knowledge of the lagoon, tides, and weather patterns of Tangalle.

How we keep you safe

Certified guides

All lead guides are open-water experienced, first-aid trained, and deeply familiar with Mawella Lagoon conditions, currents, and access points.

Premium safety gear

Every guest receives a correctly sized ISO-standard buoyancy aid, paddles in excellent condition, and well-maintained kayaks inspected daily.

Weather-first decisions

We constantly monitor wind, rain, and tide conditions and will reschedule, reroute, or cancel a tour if we believe conditions are not safe.

Small group focus

We keep group sizes intentionally small so your guide can maintain clear visibility, communication, and support for every paddler.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to swim?

Strong swimming is not required, but basic comfort in water is recommended. Every guest must wear a buoyancy aid and remains within close distance of the guide at all times.

Are lifejackets mandatory?

Yes. Buoyancy aids are mandatory for all guests whenever they are on the water, regardless of swimming ability or tour type.

Is kayaking suitable for children?

Yes, we welcome families. We offer stable kayaks and can recommend calmer time slots better suited for younger paddlers. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

What happens in case of bad weather?

Your safety is our priority. If the lagoon or coastal conditions are not suitable, we may reschedule your experience, offer an alternative route, or cancel the tour.

Ready to paddle with confidence?

If you have any specific concerns or accessibility needs, reach out before your tour. We're happy to adjust pace, timing, or route whenever possible to keep you comfortable and safe.
